1) Preparation: Packing as the First Step of the Camino
If you feel slightly obsessed with packing lists, welcome—you’re already walking the Camino in your head.
Researching gear, trimming weight, and choosing “just enough” is a modern rite of passage. It’s how we calm
the pre-Camino nerves and practice the Camino mindset: simplicity, intention, and trust.
A helpful shift: don’t pack for fear (“what if…”). Pack for function (“what will I use every day?”).
Spain has supermarkets and pharmacies. Your back and knees, however, are with you the whole way.
Buen Camino mindset: Pack less than you think you need. Walk further than you think you can.
2) Packing Principles
A) Keep weight low (your future knees will thank you)
- Backpack size: Most pilgrims are happiest with a 30–40L pack.
- Clothing rule: One set to wear, one to wash (avoid “just in case” duplicates).
B) Choose quick-dry, technical fabrics
- Favor merino or lightweight materials to reduce chafing and speed up laundry drying.
- Fast-dry underwear and socks are among the highest-ROI items on the Camino.
C) Break in shoes and test your system before Spain
- Wear your trail runners/boots for weeks beforehand.
- Do a few practice walks with your full pack (ideally in rain) to confirm your rain plan works.
D) Pack for repeatable days
The Camino is a series of similar days: walk, eat, wash, rest, repeat. Pack for that loop.
Anything that doesn’t support that rhythm usually becomes dead weight.

5) FAQ: Camino Packing Questions
1) How big should my Camino backpack be?
For most pilgrims, 30–40 liters is enough (and helps prevent overpacking).
2) How many outfits do I need on the Camino?
Most pilgrims do best with a simple system: one to wear, one to wash.
3) Should I bring hiking boots or trail runners?
Either can work, but the key is fit + break-in time. Wear them for weeks before you go.
4) What’s the most underestimated item?
Foot care (blister prevention) and earplugs for shared dorms.
